“As a seminary professor for the last fifteen years, I regularly encounter this pessimistic perspective in my students. I continue to be dismayed at how many Christians blithely assume things are getting worse. But I’ve found one simple way to shake up their perspective: I borrow a famous thought experiment from philosopher John Rawls in which Rawls proposes a way to envision the just society.

Here’s how my version goes: imagine that you are about to be born, but you do not know what gender, ethnicity, or socio-economic status you will have when born. Nor do you know whether you will have a physical or mental disability. With that in mind, would you rather be born into North America in 1800, 1900, or 2000?”

A Book Review: The Sabbath World http://ohsworld.com/OhsZanyWorld/2013/02/24/a-book-review-the-sabbath-world/ http://ohsworld.com/OhsZanyWorld/2013/02/24/a-book-review-the-sabbath-world/#comments Sun, 24 Feb 2013 15:01:12 +0000 Oh http://ohsworld.com/OhsZanyWorld/?p=244 The Sabbath World Glimpses of A Different Order of Time

By Judith Shulevitz

Her website is here:  http://judithshulevitz.com/ Current website url, as of February 24 2013.

An interesting book on how to look at the Sabbath combining religious thoughts, secular thoughts and history in one book. This book is a book about finding the Sabbath’s place in a fast and unsure world. And about finding what the Sabbath means. Is the Sabbath a religious thing? Is there a place for a sabbath in a secular world? And if so how does one go about finding that place?

She has some insights that are pretty interesting. One of which is how as a society we look at time and how that look has changed throughout the centuries. I had never thought about that before, really.  Another interesting point she asks about, is there a place in the secular world for a sabbath?  A place in time for society to take a collective time off from worldly cares each week?

It is written from what I would call a, secular Jewish searcher’s, standpoint. So don’t expect any great religious AH GotchA! moments.  Coming into the Christian faith from the standpoint of not being a believer, I have some problems understanding her points at time. Yet on the the other hand having accepted the faith as a Christian Sabbath keeper I can look at life long Christian Sabbath keepers and see somewhat what she means. As I often see the same questions from Christians.

One of the interesting things I found was the question of, if we should force even a secular sabbath on people for the good of the people. She seems to believe that perhaps we should. I find this to be somewhat disturbing as I don’t believe that the government should be able to tell me if I should or I should not be able to buy on a certain day of the week. I do wonder if this may come from her desire to be required to take a rest from the weekly grind as if somehow she thinks it will make it easier to do?

She seems to be bothered by the fact that she can not make her idea of what the Sabbath should be, coincide with her idea of how she wants to spend the Sabbath. I think that this is an issue for all Sabbath keepers some more so then others. And especially with these that have been in a Sabbath keeping religion all their life perhaps more so. As it too often becomes a list of I can’t do’s instead of a list of what can I do. God in the Torah gave ten commandments, perhaps eleven depending on how you count them. The first four have to do with our relationship to God the last six have to do with our relationship to man. Eight of the commandments are listed as negatives. Don’t do this or don’t do that. The fifth, says to honor your mother and your father, one of the positive commandments. The other commandment listed in a positive way is the fourth, the one that says to remember the Sabbath. These rules when given on the mountain were not new ideas, they were all brought down though the ages from the creation of man. I do not understand Jewish religion very well but it seems that at least some believe that these were new ideas on the mountain.

If all the don’t do this or don’t do that can be boiled down to 8 items really doesn’t that allow a lot more that we can do then we can’t do?

If there is one question that I could have asked her to answer in her book, it would be, how does the Sabbath and keeping it relate to God and our relationship to God? Ok perhaps that is two questions. On this point her book has failed.  But overall the book gave me something to think about, it answered some questions and asked me some questions. That is what a good book should do.  I would recommend to anyone that is religious to read this book because it causes one to question what is religion. And to non believers if they are interested in moral issues, it would make a good read for them too.

“Yes, we understand the First Amendment and all of this stuff,” wrote Khalid Amayreh, a prominent Islamist commentator and blogger in Hebron on the West Bank. “But you must also understand that the Prophet (for us) is a million times more sacred than the American Constitution.”
He adds: “As Americans have their own idiots and fanatics, we, too, have our idiots and fanatics. And as Americans are utterly unable — probably unwilling as well — to stop their idiots, we, too, are less able to rein in ours.”

APPOINTMENT WITH A NEW DENTIST. I NOTICED HIS DDS DIPLOMA, WHICH BORE HIS
FULL NAME.

SUDDENLY, I REMEMBERED A TALL, HANDSOME, DARK HAIRED BOY WITH THE SAME NAME
HAD BEEN IN MY HIGH SCHOOL CLASS SOME 30-ODD YEARS AGO.

COULD HE BE THE SAME GUY THAT I HAD A SECRET CRUSH ON, WAY BACK THEN?

UPON SEEING HIM, HOWEVER, I QUICKLY DISCARDED ANY SUCH THOUGHT.

THIS BALDING, GRAY HAIRED MAN WITH THE DEEPLY LINED FACE WAS WAY TOO OLD TO
HAVE BEEN MY CLASSMATE, AFTER HE EXAMINED MY TEETH, I ASKED HIM IF HE HAD
ATTENDED  MORGAN   PARK   HIGH SCHOOL  .

“YES, YES I DID. I’M A MUSTANG! ‘ HE GLEAMED WITH PRIDE.

‘WHEN DID YOU GRADUATE?’ I ASKED

HE ANSWERED, IN 1975. WHY DO YOU ASK?

“YOU WERE IN MY CLASS!” I EXCLAIMED..

HE LOOKED AT ME CLOSELY.

THEN THAT UGLY,
OLD,
BALD,
WRINKLED,
FAT ASS,
GRAY HAIRED,
DECREPIT,
WART HOG……

ASKED
‘WHAT DID YOU TEACH???

Whatever Happened to America? http://ohsworld.com/OhsZanyWorld/2009/04/10/whatever-happened-to-america/ http://ohsworld.com/OhsZanyWorld/2009/04/10/whatever-happened-to-america/#comments Fri, 10 Apr 2009 19:47:52 +0000 Oh http://ohsworld.com/OhsZanyWorld/?p=132 This Is The Enemy

I received a email with a lot of old WWII posters in it. They were pretty cool from an historical point of view.

Here is the original letter with it:

I wonder whatever happened to this kind of thinking?

I got a lump in my throat when I read this. I “grew up”

thinking patriotism, it is the AMERICAN way! I am glad

to see that somebody saved them.

Then followed a bunch of pictures.

Then this:

These were our parents. What in God’s name have we let happen?

I guess we are the last generation to see, or even remember anything like these? Whatever happened?  Political correctness (or “re-education”) happened, lack of God’s name happened, lack of personal responsibility happened, lack of personal integrity and honesty happened, lack of respect and loyalty to our country happened, lack of being an American happened.

What follows is my answer to the letter:

I guess we are the last generation to see, or even remember anything like these?

Wow how old are you? Like 77?

Most Americans are 2 to 4 generations from these posters. The oldest baby boomer is really not old enough to remember this as they would have been born some time between 1944 and 1948 with the last boomers being born in 1960 to 1964 (depending on who you want to believe.

Whatever happened?

Time happened!

Political correctness (or “re-education”) happened, lack of God’s name happened, lack of personal responsibility happened, lack of personal integrity and honesty happened, lack of respect and loyalty to our country happened, lack of being an American happened.

What happened? Yeah, “re-education” happened. We forgot about the Nuremberg Trials. We forgot that freedom extends to even these that disagree with us! Think the McCarthy Hearings. The fact that we are suppose to care about the poor. That money was to be gotten morally.

How can we have respect and loyalty for a country that fails to follow what they have said was good. When that, which they in international courts said was right is not followed by them.

Yeah, personal integrity and honesty was shown to be wrong!

These of the older the baby boomers that I as one of the youngest baby boomers have  followed into the brave new future have taught me that it is not good to be honest and poor. That instead of being poor, it is better to be rich or at least well off and dishonest.

They have taught me that I should sell drugs and trash music and movies to the young people in order to snare their minds so that I may sell even more trash to them in order to become even wealthier. And that is the just and honest thing to do. We call it capitalism at its best!

They have taught me that it is right to lie to get what I want.

That it is alright to go to war to get what I want. And that in order to get and have a society of young people ready to go to war that I need to sell them violent death affirming video games and music and movies to prepare their mind to kill animals (anything not us) and what’s really cool I can get richer doing it!

By teaching me these things, the older boomers have taught me that “personal integrity and honesty” are whatever will make me richer and make me more liked by rich people like me.

If you really want to blame someone look in the mirror and ask yourself what is true? What do I believe? How do I act on what I believe? Are the two in agreement?

What do you believe?

What is Poverty Income? http://ohsworld.com/OhsZanyWorld/2009/03/06/what-is-poverty-income/ http://ohsworld.com/OhsZanyWorld/2009/03/06/what-is-poverty-income/#comments Fri, 06 Mar 2009 18:40:13 +0000 Oh http://ohsworld.com/OhsZanyWorld/?p=100 US poverty level for one person is: $10,830.  200 percent is $21,660. 200 percent of poverty is a high rate set for income based programs.  As, I earn in any given year 7,000 to 8,000 dollars more then that. I earn too much to be eligible for any poverty based program.

My podium is this! Poverty levels set by the US Government is a sham! Poverty really starts at around $40,000 maybe even $45,000 a year.

Working income levels go from there up to maybe $110,000 or even a $120,000. (Though with the economy, the working income may come down some).  A few years ago the City of Fergus Falls in Minnesota was offering to sell new homes to poor people. The minimum required household income was $65,000 a year!

Middle income goes up to $250,000 or $300,000. Don’t believe me?  Watch these news shows where the reporters are complaining how hard it is to make ends meet. And how the “middle class” has had to cut out some $30 lunches and $70 to $100 dinner shows every month just to make ends meet. And have even had to go to cheaper cars maybe $30,000 and have to trade them at maybe 4 years instead of 2 or 3 years.

I am not complaining about my income level. But I do believe that people, esp. these that are earning bigger incomes have no idea what it means to be a poverty level.  I think it would be good that Congress and the President had to live at what are government guidelines for poverty. I bet there would be changes to the equations of how to establish what poverty level is.

Signed,

A high end working poor Stiff,
